1 in 8 Americans Over 50 Show Signs of Food Addiction
About 13% of Americans aged 50-80 show signs of addiction to processed “junk” foods, according to a recent poll conducted by the University of Michigan. The percentage was higher for women than men, and 44% of those polled had at least one or more symptoms of food addiction.
“The word addiction may seem strong when it comes to food,” said Ashley Gearhardt, a psychologist involved in the poll, “but research has shown that our brains respond as strongly to highly processed foods, especially those highest in sugar, simple starches and fat, as they do to tobacco, alcohol and other addictive substances.”
Data was collected from the recent National Poll on Healthy Aging. The poll included a set of 13 questions related to junk food addiction, including questions about “symptoms” like intense cravings, inability to cut back on processed foods, and signs of withdrawal.
Given the findings, Gearhardt and poll director Jeffrey Kullgren recommend better support and resources for those who want to eat healthier but struggle to give up junk food. Part of this could involve identifying how emotions are connected to unhealthy eating patterns.
Compounds in Green, Black Tea Can Lower Blood Pressure
Both green and black tea contain antioxidant compounds, known as catechins, that have demonstrated an ability to lower blood pressure. A comprehensive study has now pinpointed two specific catechins— epicatechin gallate and epigallocatechin-3-gallate— as the main reason for this effect by showing that they help relax blood vessels.
More specifically, the catechins were found to activate a certain ion channel protein named KCNQ5. Because KCNQ5 is found in the smooth muscle that lines blood cells, this activation leads to the relaxation of blood vessels and lower blood pressure.
Researchers in the study also looked at whether different ways of drinking tea would change its effects on blood pressure. Although adding milk did block the KCNQ5 activation in lab tests, the study authors believe the catechins from tea and the milk molecules would be separated in a human stomach, preserving the beneficial effects.
In addition, the study authors don’t believe that drinking tea iced or hot has an impact on its potential to lower blood pressure because the temperature of the human body is high enough to activate the beneficial effects of the catechins.

8 Surprising Benefits of Reading a (Real) Book
E-books may be convenient, but don’t count out “old-fashioned” paper or hardbacks just yet. Some research has shown that flipping the pages of a real book as you read it may improve your comprehension, and they are the much better choice for relaxing reading at bedtime (no blue light). Reading in general is also connected to stress relief, increased intelligence, and a lower risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. (More)
Why Too Much Sun Can Make Your Skin “Leathery”
Though important for vitamin D production, sunlight is one of the biggest contributors to premature skin aging. For those who regularly work outdoors or spend long hours in the sun, UV rays can actually make skin look and feel leathery. This is mainly because collagen fibers start packing themselves tightly together in response to the radiation, leading to stiffer, thicker, and tougher skin tissue. (More)
Goji Berries May Protect Against Age-Related Vision Loss
Goji berries, also known as wolfberries, are native to China and have been enjoyed for thousands of years as a longevity food with “eye brightening” qualities. Now, a recent study has found that just an ounce of these berries eaten 5 days a week may help protect against age-related macular degeneration, the leading cause of vision loss in older adults. These vision benefits could be due to the high content of lutein and zeaxanthin found in goji berries. (More)
Being a “Weekend Warrior” Can Help Protect Your Heart
‘Weekend warrior’ is the nickname given to someone who does vigorous exercise 1-2 times a week rather than spreading it throughout the week. And while better heart health is usually connected to more regular physical activity, some new research indicates that concentrating exercise into just 1-2 days a week has similar benefits for decreasing the risk of heart attack, heart failure, and stroke. The key seems to be meeting the recommendation of 150 minutes or more of physical activity per week, no matter how many days are used to achieve it. (More)
7 Ways Supermarkets Trick You Into Buying More Junk Food
Though you may not realize it, most grocery stores are carefully laid out to “encourage” you to buy more food— usually junk/processed food. It starts out innocently enough with fresh produce and/or flowers when you walk in the door to put you in a good mood. Staples (bread, milk, etc.) are kept at the back of the store to make you walk by lots of other products to get to them. Within the aisles themselves, manufacturers fight for the shelves at eye level, and carts keep growing larger so you can fit more groceries in. (More)

Despite its name, the small intestine is the longest segment of your digestive tract. It’s where most of the digestive process takes place and where your body absorbs almost all the nutrients it gets from food. When stretched out, the small intestine is about 22 feet long.
